This trail provides an unequalled opportunity
to explore the highlands of Kerry with the majestic
MacGillycuddy Reeks, Ireland's highest mountain range,
as a backdrop. Ride on country lanes and mountain
tracks and the beach at Waterville and on the magnificent
6.4km (4 miles) stretch of golden sand at Rossbeigh.
The Iveragh Peninsula, with many places of archaeological
and historic interest stretches south-west from Killarney
for nearly 40 miles and is highlighted by the world
renowned Ring of Kerry. The holiday includes accommodation
in Killarney, Glenbeigh and Waterville with luggage
moved to each accommodation and packed lunch each
day. At all times the trail is accompanied by an experienced
guide and special care is taken of nervous riders.
Your hosts, and proprietors of the Killarney Riding
Stables, Donie & Noreen O'Sullivan have over 37
years experience providing visitors from all over
the world with unforgettable experiences. Donie's
cobs, ponies and hunters are happy horses. A whistle
brings them at a run from the furthest fields. They'll
become your friends too, after long companiable days
together.

Your
Horse Riding Vacation Itinerary: |

| Day 1 - Saturday, Arrival in Killarney
- The tour starts in Killarney town where you
meet your guide and the rest of the group. |
| Day 2 - Sunday, Caragh Lake &
Glenbeigh - Assemble at Killarney Riding Stables.
With riders, horses and all luggage ready for transfer,
the day begins with a short trip to the base of Seefinn
Mountain, where the first day's ride starts. When horses
and riders have been introduced, the ride heads off,
and up over the Windy Gap, viewing the splendor of Caragh
Lake and the valleys beyond. The ride then continues
on to Coomasaharn Lake enclosed by Horseshoe Mountain,
followed by a scenic ride over an Irish Bog, finishing
for the day at our stables in Mountain Stage. |
| The overnight stop for Sunday and Monday nights
is in the quaint village of Glenbeigh. (Glenbeigh
comes from Gleann Beithe, the Glen of the Birch Trees).
Surrounded almost entirely by mountains, Glenbeigh
offers a famous friendliness and humour which is nowhere
better found than in this tranquil and charming region
of Kerry. The beauty of the area is breathtaking,
with the River Behy and Rossbeigh Strand close by.
History is evident throughout the locality and such
a destination as Winns Folly Castle is well worth
a visit. |
| Day 3 - Monday, Rossbeigh Beach
- After breakfast on the second day the riders
return to the stables of the previous evening and begin
Monday's ride. The day is spent on Rossbeigh beach,
galloping along stretches of golden sand and exploring
magnificent sand dunes, returning from the beach via
the Cliff road. |
| Day 4 - Tuesday, Knoc Bawn, Liss
Bawn, Waterville Village - Following breakfast,
riders are collected from the accommodation. A morning
ride takes horse and rider from Kells Station through
the bogs of Cnoc Bawn and on to Liss Bawn, taking in
some spectacular views of Cahirciveen and its surrounds.
Lunch is served alongside a nearby forestry. After lunch
continue on through Island Boy and the Inny Valley,
finishing for the day alongside the Tulligane Woods. |
| The overnight stop for Tuesday & Wednesday is
spent by the coastal village of Waterville. Waterville
(the little whirlpool), nestles on a narrow strip of
land between Lough Currane and the Atlantic Ocean, in
the heart of south-west Kerry. Situated as it is between
the seashore and the impressive mountains and headlands,
the area has many interesting routes to offer and many
fine beaches. |
| Day 5 - Wednesday, Tulligane Woods,
Inny Valley, Waterville Village - After breakfast
collection from your accommodation. Wednesday brings
an adventurous morning spent in Tulligane Woods, riding
through the Inny Valley and lunching by the Inny River
in an old School House. Afterwards, a scenic ride into
Waterville via the old Glencar/Waterville road, along
the shores of the famous fishing lake - Lough Currane. |
| Day 6- Thursday, Waterville Beach
- Breakfast and collection from your accommodation.
Luggage transfer to Killarney for final accommodation
move. The day begins with a brisk ride to Waterville
Beach, spending the morning enjoying some exciting gallops.
The panorama of Hogg's Head and Ballinskelligs Bay conjures
up the afternoon ride in Waterville. Afterwards both
horses and riders are transferred back to Killarney. |
| Day 7 - Friday, Departure
Day - After breakfast you can stay absorbing
the atmosphere in Killarney or else head on your way
home. |

| *Accommodation is based on a twin sharing basis. Due
to the isolated nature of some of our locations, we
cannot guarantee the availability of single room accommodation.
In exceptional cases we may be able to provide a single
room at a supplement of €150.00 for the week. |
| Meals: Packed lunches are included
are provided for on each day. Evening meals are not
included, but your guide will be happy to suggest restaurants/pubs
each night, which typically costs between €18 and
€25 |
| Your Horse: A wide range of horses
are available for your selection; including Irish Draught,
Cobs, Hunters, Connemaras and some rare breeds such
as Percheron, Shire, Clydesdale, Cleaveland Bay, Fell
and Suffolk Punch. |
| Starting Times: Days usually begin
between 10-10:30am except for Monday and Thursday when
we ride on the beach, then times are depending on tidal
conditions. |
Payment & Cancellation Policy:
A 50% deposit is charged at time of booking. The balance
is payable 60 days prior to arrival. Payment accepted
by Visa, MasterCard and American Express.
Deposits are fully refundable less any expenses incurred,
if notification is received at least 60 days before
departure. |
Recommended clothing:
- Riding helmet with chin strap, or suitable harness
that keeps the helmet on & in place.
- Good quality waterproof raincoat and waterproof
rain pants.
(No ponchos, plastic or cycling capes allowed. Clients
will not be permitted to wear these for riding).
- Long riding boots / or paddock boots with half
or full chaps (footwear with a heel)
- Comfortable Riding wear (breaches/jodhpurs)
- Jeans are not suitable unless you typically ride
with jeans & chaps.
- Light sweaters for summer, heavy sweater for spring
or autumn.
- Riding whip/crop & gloves.
- Please note that Killarney Riding Stables do not
provide any of the above items.

for transfers from Shannon, Cork or Kerry Airports
based on the following taxi prices:
Taxi prices per car (up to 3 people)
Cork Airport, 60 miles - 1.5 to 2 hour journey: €100
Shannon Airport, 70 miles - 2 hour journey: €135
Kerry Airport, 10 miles - 15-minute journey: €28
Over 3 People: Extra charge applies depending on numbers

The train can be taken from Dublin to Killarney for
€55 and from Cork for €20

| Late Arrivals: For clients making
their own transfer arrangements, please plan to arrive
before 6pm (18.00hrs) to ensure that there will be somebody
here to meet you to discuss the plans for the week and
to take you to your accommodation. Any person anticipating
a late arrival should contact the stables and make them
aware, to ensure there is someone at the office when
they will arrive. |
Saddle Bags: These are provided but
typically only suited to carrying the following items,
due to space:
rain coat and rain proof over-pants, water-bottle, extra
sweater, camera and a small bag with personal items. |
| Insurance: We recommend that all
clients take out personal accident as well as baggage
insurance, as the Killarney Reeks Trail can in no way
be responsible for accident, loss, damage or injury
to person or baggage. It is advisable to bring comfortable
riding gear such as gloves, riding boots, hard hat,
a rain coat and warm clothing. However, hard hats and
boots can be provided, if required. |
