Dun Carloway is located on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, Scotland and it is a well preserved broch. The broch is a majestic monument that stands out in the landscape and gives an impressive example of Iron Age architecture. The broch is preserved really well and on the east part of the broch, the walls stand at 9 metres tall. The majority of brochs were built during the time of 100BC to 100 AD and Dun Carloway was probably built around 200 BC. What makes Dun Carloway special is that it gives you an excellent cross section of a broch and it is a type of structure that is only found in Scotland. During excavations evidence tells that Dun Carloway may have been used until about 1000AD. The Morrison Clan during the 1500s is said to use the place as one of their stronghold and occupied by a local chief and would have used it as a symbol of status and control over the local landscape and resources.
