Eilean Donan Castle

Eilean Donan Castle is regarded as the most iconic images of Scotland.  It is a small tidal island where three lochs come together – Loch Duich, Long Dong, and Loch Alsh in the Western Highlands of Scotland. This picturesque castle is very popular for photographs, films and television. The castle is located one kilometre from the village of Dornie. There is presently a footbridge connecting the island to the mainland since the castle’s restoration in the 20th century. It is part of the Kintail National Scenic Area and is one of forty that is located in Scotland. It was a stronghold for Clan Mackenzie and their allies Clan MacRae in the 13th century. During the Jacobite rebellions in the eighteenth century which the MacKenzies’ were involved in, led to the castle destruction by government ships. During the twentieth century Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap reconstructed the ruins of it to the present day building that can be visited. The castle has its own visitor centre which includes a coffee and gift shop. It is regarded by some as one of the most beautiful castles in Scotland.
