General Post Office (GPO)
The General Post Office (GPO) is the HQ for the Irish Post Office situated on Dublin’s O’ Connell St. The GPO is one of Ireland’s most famous buildings and landmarks and is the last of the great Georgian buildings in Dublin.
Originally the GPO was situated on the site of the Commercial Buildings which are now the site of the Central Bank. The GPO is most famously known for serving as the headquarters of the Leaders of the Irish Volunteers during the Easer Rising of 1916. Most of the building was destroyed by fire during the rising but it was repaired when the Irish Free State government took office. The front part of the building is all that remains of the original building today.
When visiting our Capital, Dublin make sure to stop by this famous landmark in Irish history.
