Loch Ness is located in the Scottish Highlands and is a large, deep, freshwater loch. The waters surrounding Loch Ness are world famous and are full of myths and legends. The loch extends 37km southwest of Inverness and it is 16 metres above sea level. Loch Ness has gained notoriety for the alleged sightings of the Loch Ness Monster that was first photographed in 1933. There has been in the region of 1,000 eye witness accounts and sightings and with unexplained evidence and scientific research continues to be bewildered by its existence. It is the second largest Scottish loch by surface area after Loch Lomond but because of its depth, it is the largest by volume of the British Isles with its deepest point that being 230 metres. This area of the Scottish Highlands is world renowned for its spectacular scenery, adventure sports with many castles and lighthouses located throughout the landscape.
