Oxford is a city located in Oxfordshire in central southern England and circles around the renowned University of Oxford which was established in the 12th century. This medieval city was nicknamed the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’ by poet Matthew Arnold and this was down to the architecture of its 38 colleges that were part of the city centre. Oxford has a population of 155,000. It has been home to students and royalty for over 800 years and became a town in the 9th century although it is known to have had residents in the town for thousands of years. It has really become a bustling town today and while it still has the University, it now also includes many industries such as information technology, science, manufacturing, education and publishing. There is a great combination of modern and ancient in the city. There is so much to see and do in Oxford including Carfax Tower offering amazing views out over the city, the famed Bodleian Library and the historic Covered Market with its range of visitor shops. While roaming the streets in Oxford you will also see many well-known sights that have been used for TV shows and films such as Harry Potter. Other attractions include Oxford Botanic Garden and is the oldest botanic garden in the UK, Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, Harcourt Arboretum and Pitt Rivers Museum.
